Lovable sleazeball Mac DeMarco is known for his slippery jangle pop and his so-called “jizz jazz” brand of rock’n’roll, but he’s showcasing a softer side of his sound by releasing a new acoustic EP.
It makes more sense when you watch it. A blurry, flickering callout to B-movies of old, the “The Man Man” video sees Ty himself being stalked by a car full of creepy creatures.
Where has Ezra Furman been hiding? Already on his fifth album (albeit his first with new band The Boyfriends backing him) this Chicago-based singer-songwriter offers a bratty, ragged take on New York Dolls, Spector-era Ramones and E Street Band carnival rock, revealing a gift for crafting freeway-cruisin’ tunes served with an extra helping of roadkill.

On December 3, the garage rock gatekeepers will share the franchise’s second installment: a four-track platter documenting a recent set that SPIN cover star Ty Segall played with Fuzz at the SF Eagle.
It’s another blistering demonstration of Thee Oh Sees greatest trick: they’re the only prolific band who doesn’t put out records often enough.

Thee Oh Sees kicked into a marathon set of hypnotic bass (played on a guitar, of course, by the tireless Petey Dammit), ghostly falsettos, pummeling drums, and spooky keyboard dispatches.
His new video for the album track “The Man Man” would’ve been perfect for Halloween, but it’s still pretty badass a few days later. In the LEAF-directed video, a quartet of terrifying monster-masked gunmen stalk Segall through a dark street.

New Orleans’ Quintron and Miss Pussycat have made the personal touch their calling card. She makes puppets for surreal, onstage puppet shows — such as the one involving Christmas Bear and a goblin cake that she performed last night.

So, a word to the wise. Check out Mac DeMarco at Fun Fun Fun Fest. He will be killing it. I mean, quite literally, murdering it, so watch out and stay safe out there, guys.
Maybe it was the death of Lou Reed, who John Dwyer dedicated their set to, and the weird energy that brought, and the location certainly was condusive, but Thee Oh Sees were absolutely on fire Sunday night.
And Bay Area psych weirdo White Fence has turned in a jangly, flowery cover of “Today’s Lesson,” a 1991 banger from the crustcore band Filth. The White Fence version does not sound anything like the Filth one, and you can hear it below.
For now, Mac’s plan is working. Being a successful pop musician is only partly about music; it is also about developing a marketable personality and pushing that personality to the limit.

Ty Segall is playing a one-off show on December 2nd at London’s Scala, performing his new album Sleeper that was released back in August via Drag City.
Prolific, garage-favouring jam band Thee Oh Sees are compiling yet another batch of their non-album tracks for a third Singles Collection. This latest edition arrives November 26 via band leader John Dwyer’s Castle Face Records imprint.
Jonathan Richman is Mac Demarco’s role model as “it seems like he’s just had a very enjoyable time his whole life”. Judging by his Scala show, Mac doesn’t seem to be struggling to replicate this lifestyle.
It’s probably too early to declare DeMarco one of a kind, but there’s more to him than the joking around.
When you say it’s “‘too loud,” that’s really code for, “This music sucks!” Dinosaur Jr. can never be too loud, for example. And wait till you hear Fuzz!
