NME reviews Ty Segall’s “20th Century Boy”
NME
“he effectively breathes life into a track so synonymous with pop culture that most people could probably happy live ever after without hearing a single second of it ever again…”
“he effectively breathes life into a track so synonymous with pop culture that most people could probably happy live ever after without hearing a single second of it ever again…”
“‘Ty Rex’ is a set of Bolan covers by Segall that brings together two out-of-print Record Store Day releases, a 12-inch from 2011 and a seven-inch from 2013, with the addition of a previously unreleased take on ’20th Century Boy’ – a gritty rendition that darts along with hardcore intensity…”
“Before Ty Segall can issue Emotional Mugger, his latest (in a string of many) collections of grimy garage rock, but he has to look back before he moves forward. Way back. The California-based songwriter’s affinity for the sparkly songwriting of T. Rex’s Marc Bolan has been no secret, but next week he’s underscoring that with the release of Ty-Rex, a compilation of covers on Goner Records…”
“As the California garage-pop wunderkind becomes a grown-ass man, will he still make super catchy, loud and awesome music? The answer is most likely “heck yes.” Tickets are $16 Adv./ $18 Day of show. Get them here, OK!…”
“Earlier this week, Ty Segall and Drag City sent out a VHS tape featuring an 11-song album called Emotional Mugger. Today, Segall officially announced the album, which will be out January 22 via Drag City. (Yes, it’s coming out in non-VHS formats.) He’s also announced a giant tour; find those dates below, as well as the album art…”
“Ty Segall has been keeping himself busy. In the past four months alone, the California garage-rock king has formed two new bands and released a ripping new album with his band Fuzz. But it’s been over a year since his last solo LP, the glam-rock opus Manipulator, which means it’s about time for a new one. And, sure enough, Pitchfork reports that his label, Drag City, has mailed out copies of Emotional Mugger, a new 11-track album credited to “Ty Garrett Segall,” on glitched-out VHS tape…”
“Less than a month removed from the releases of FUZZ’s sophomore album, II, ever-prolific Cali garage pop guy Ty Segall has announced yet another project. This one is an album called Emotional Mugger, and to play it, you’ll apparently need to hook up your old VHS player…”
“The 28-year-old visits The Grey Eagle on Nov. 12 with his other other other band, Fuzz, whose second album, “II,” also debuted this year. The trio’s modern take on the classic garage band sound features shades of Nirvana and Black Sabbath as Charles Moothart’s big guitar solos explode from the driving distortion backbone of Chad Ubovich’s bass and Segall’s rollicking drums…”
“Ty Segall isn’t yet as prolific as Robert Pollard or Ryan Adams, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t trying his damnedest to reach their collective level of (over)productivity. Since 2008, his solo output alone encompasses seven full-length albums and in excess of 30 singles, EPs and miscellaneous live or split records. Factor in his collaborations with Sic Alps, White Fence and Mikal Cronin, as well as limited-run releases, and it’s clear that the 28-year-old’s catalog is calibrated to give completists fits…”
“Leading the bill is Brian-fucking-Wilson, who will be performing Beach Boys’ 1966 masterpiece Pet Sounds in full, which is worth the ticket price alone. Joining him will be Animal Collective, Ty Segall, Sleep, Flying Lotus, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Lee Scratch Perry. Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and Black Mountains complete the first wave of acts…”
“Segall’s last few years have been remarkably prolific. Since 2008, every year has seen a Segall solo album. He has also released handfuls of singles and EPs, collaborated with several other bands and is on tour relentlessly. The kicker to all of this is his age — he’s only 28…”
“Ty Segall is to reissue his two T. Rex covers records this year as an expanded ‘Ty-Rex’ album…”
“Ty Segall is revisiting his love for Marc Bolan and T. Rex, having announced that he is compiling both of his old Ty-Rex EPs for an expanded LP release…”
“Ty Segall has formed a new band with members of Melvins and Redd Kross…”
“There are those that say that a prolific rock guitarist like Ty Segall should never put down the electric. Why would he? But those that cling to this narrow viewpoint, have obviously never seen Ty Segall rock a crowd without the benefit of electric amplification…”
“Ty Segall just finished up a run of solo acoustic shows in New York on Friday. As Stereogum points out, he covered Neil Young’s On the Beach track “For the Turnstiles” and trotted out a new song…”
Segall’s impassioned sets of acoustic-driven throwback were inspiring, and sound equally as raw and biting on the Segall/King Tuff split.
There is a new Ty Segall/King Tuff split live album called Live at Pickathon, Vol. 2. It’s on Easy Sound. The pre-order copies are all gone but it will be released for all to dig on May 4. This is LP only.
Pickathon Music Festival organizers are releasing a limited edition split LP capturing 2013 festival sets from King Tuff and Ty Segall.

Ty Segall and King Tuff have both made a name for themselves with their rowdy, infectious garage rock, and now they’re teaming up for a split record. Live at Pickathon will be released on May 4 through Welk Music Group.
Ty Segall has announced plans for a short solo acoustic tour, following a set at Burgerama fest in Santa Ana.
Rowdy crowd, meet stacks of amplifiers — Ty, Charlie, Mikal, and Emily came to singe your ears off. There have been live recordings of Ty before of course, but never so crisply and fully realized as this scorching platter of fuzz.
It’s been almost five whole months since he put out a record, but he’s back with the Mr. Face EP, out this week on Famous Class. Mr. Face is a double 7″ EP pressed on translucent red and blue-colored vinyl, and you can apparently use the records as a pair of 3D glasses.
For all the talk of Ty Segall being prolific, as true as it is, many have forgotten another quality of Segall’s: his consistency. The garage laureate has delivered outstanding record after outstanding record, and he’s even improved on the way. The 27 year-old has made great strides not only as a songwriter, but as a producer too.
Indie’s most productive garage rocker, who has released seven albums under his own name since 2008 and been involved in a variety of other projects, isn’t using the new year as an excuse to rest. The title track from his upcoming EP, Mr. Face, is modern midtempo rockabilly before letting loose and ending in a classic crunchy freakout.
Ty Segall’s got a new EP on the way called Mr. Face. It’s out on January 13 via Famous Class, and it’s being billed as “the world’s first playable pair of 3D glasses”. Today, he’s shared the EP’s title track.

Ty Segall put out a jewel with Manipulator this past August. Proving that everything he touches is gold, this rock ‘n’ roll wunderkind does no wrong with a whole lot of fuzz.
Metal guru Ty Segall plays nearly all the instruments, overdubbing himself into a shaggy-ass arena band.
