“America’s current favorite Canadian, Mac Demarco, returned to Dallas last night and he brought all of his synthy, dad rock hits with him. The wunderkind, who is no longer 22 or booking free shows like he did at Bryan Street Tavern way back in 2012, proved he was playing in the big leagues, performing charismatically […]
“The opener, “Time Collapse Pt II./ The 7th Terror” has Segalls’ vocals screaming over the coming doom no one can escape. “Let it Live” comes with an opening riff that rattles over Chad Ubovich’s bass and Segall’s more than competent drumming. The song comes to a close with a wailing string section, which scratches itself […]
“Mac DeMarco discovered Rockaway the way so many others since 1977 have. “Probably from the Ramones song, I think,” he said. DeMarco is a star in the indie-rock scene and prior to the recording of his most recent album Another One, he began looking for a new home base…”
“Fuzz, a no-nonsense garage rock trio that specializes in loud kickass songs and even louder kick ass songs, will play two shows in the Bay Area on Sunday and Monday nights…”
“With a new Fuzz album, though, Segall is back in the spotlight, playing drums with his power trio of guitarist Charlie Moothart (Moonhearts) and bassist Chad Ubovich (Meatbodies). This time around, he heaves forth an impressive 14-song double album made for headbanging and the cultivation of bad vibes, as if all the warmth and goodwill […]
“Furman’s latest album, “Perpetual Motion People,” seems to incorporate the entire history of rock and roll. He takes everything from art-pop to ?50s doo wop and filters it through his unique perspective, writing about personal topics like gender fluidity, depression and identity…”
“Mac DeMarco right now is definitely one the favourite musicians in skateboarding. We met him on his recent tour at the Gebäude 9 in Cologne. And after the interview and the concert he told us a a few things more while a social plate of sausages…”
“His latest full-length, Perpetual Motion People, is a study in extremes between body-shaking punk rock and achingly emotional songs. With a voice reminiscent of Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes, the 29-year-old Furman — a devout Jew who identifies as gender-fluid and occasionally dons dresses and red lipstick — is a whirling dervish of sound as […]
“Mac DeMarco, Indie rock’s hardest-working slacker, needed a new passport. So the Canadian was leaving his home in Queens and driving to Montreal when he spoke with The Journal News by phone…”
“She Got Harder” (out on a 7″ in November) doesn’t read like three dudes serving the base by capitalizing on name recognition. This is music that’s exciting on its own merits, and impressively, it isn’t dwarfed by their collective discography.
“Leading the bill is Brian-fucking-Wilson, who will be performing Beach Boys’ 1966 masterpiece Pet Sounds in full, which is worth the ticket price alone. Joining him will be Animal Collective, Ty Segall, Sleep, Flying Lotus, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Lee Scratch Perry. Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and Black Mountains complete the first wave […]
Already this year, the ever-prolific Ty Segall has released an EP of his own, formed Broken Bat with members of OFF! and The Melvins, and announced a new LP from his band FUZZ. Now, he’s gone and started another band, teaming with FUZZ’s Charles Moothart and Chris Shaw of Ex-Cult to create GØGGS.
“Segall’s last few years have been remarkably prolific. Since 2008, every year has seen a Segall solo album. He has also released handfuls of singles and EPs, collaborated with several other bands and is on tour relentlessly. The kicker to all of this is his age — he’s only 28…”
“På sin nye plate gir indiehelten Mac Demarco ut adressen sin, og inviterer folk til å komme innom på en kopp kaffe. NRK inviterte han på kaffe før den utsolgte konserten i Oslo…”
“Melbourne-based King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard started in 2010 and has slowly but surely evolved from garage band and into psychedelia, krautrock, and experimentalism. With their latest effort Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, due on November 13 via ATO Records, the expands that blueprint further. Their latest track “Trapdoor” is a funky one, using a […]
“Prolific Australian psych rockers King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard released the raucous Quarters on Castle Face back in May and will release a second 2015 album, the gentler Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, on ATO this November, and they just wrapped up a tour supporting all of it. The tour concluded in NYC last night […]
“The mini-doco covers DeMarco’s life since his explosion in popularity, with the songwriter recounting his first record advance — a sweet $1,000 — which he received when he was working the night shift at a grocery store in Montreal…”
“DeMarco is one of the most distinctive songwriters in modern guitar music, his songs recalling the hazy romance of a more innocent era, a sound that rouses an incongruously seething mosh pit from the DeMarco-clones at his raucous gigs…”
“Impish indie-rock prince Mac DeMarco treks from the relaxing oceanside edge of Far Rockaway, New York, to a sold-out show in front of a sea of faces at Manhattan’s Webster Hall in our day-in-the-life mini documentary…”
“Live they added to the improvisation of the record with a dose of extra psychedelia courtesy of the super spaced-out guitar playing from the alt-rock soulmates and the fabulously fluid rhythm section…”
“ve, it becomes a ferocious, snarling beast—a perfect fusion of beauty and noise. Backed by a fantastic, propulsive rhythm section, swelling them to a quartet, Cate Le Bon and Tim Presley’s songs take on new, unexpected forms…”
“Launching into “The Way You’d Love Her” from his new album Another one, DeMarco set the mood for the rest of the gig – woozy, psychedelic slacker rock…”
“Ezra Furman has been on a quest to cover some of the most beloved songs of all time, both old and contemporary, and the last one we heard from him was of LCD Soundsystem’s “I Can Change.” Today, Furman’s presented us with his rendition of the Replacements’ “Androgynous…”
“They brought me something perfectly crappy. As soon as I played this guitar, I was like “Wow, this thing is actually a piece of shit!” They were like, “Thirty bucks?” And I was like, “Sure.”…”
“Cate Le Bon and Tim Presley’s collaboration Drinks were one of the last acts to play at the stunning Estuary Stage. Le Bon’s beautiful vocals soared over musical arrangements more sprawling than more of her solo canon but certainly none the worse for it…”
